It may only be one week into the 2026 NFL season, but some fans already have their eyes on the 2027 NFL Draft. Draft experts expect the 2027 quarterback class to be incredible with several first-round caliber players available. But the two names at the top of one expert’s watch list will probably surprise most college football fans.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. name dropped a few players he is keeping an eye on after the beginning of the 2026 college football season. Surprisingly, neither Arch Manning nor Julian Sayin made the cut.

“I think right now if you say who are the two most impressive quarterbacks I saw this weekend, it was Austin Simmons, Missouri, Friday night at Kansas. And then Kamario Taylor, the true sophomore at Mississippi State against Minnesota on Saturday,” Kiper said on Tuesday via The Golics. “Boy, if he was in this draft, he might be the number one pick overall if he can continue to play like that. So certainly for next year, can’t be in this draft, but for the 2028 draft he’ll be a guy to watch.”

Taylor had an incredible game against Minnesota, going 16-of-22 for 227 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also showed off his running skills, logging 13 carries for 86 rushing yards.

Meanwhile, Simmons went 19-of-29 for 292 passing yards and three touchdowns against Kansas.

Kiper also named a few additional college football quarterbacks he wants to see more consistency from in the coming weeks.

“But we’re still waiting on consistency from an Arch Manning and getting some better opponents for guys like Darian Mensah, of course C.J. Carr at Notre Dame, Josh Hoover at Indiana, Jayden Maiava at USC, who have started very well. But the opponents have to get a little better.” Kiper concluded.

The 2027 quarterback class certainly sounds like it is living up to all the hype.

It will be interesting to see if the hype around Simmons and Taylor continues to grow throughout the season.

Atlético Madrid face Osasuna at the Metropolitano on Wednesday evening in matchday six of La Liga, but coach Diego Simeone continued to call for patience with his side as they look to remain unbeaten on home turf.

“We’re used to the negativity from a lot of people. As soon as there’s a chance for criticism, it’s there. It’s part of growing and improving, we welcome it,” Simeone said. “The team is a work in progress. This summer, seven players left and five came in; there are four or five academy players… Organizing all this isn’t as simple as it seems.

“We have a competitive team and we’ll keep improving as we play,” Simeone said. “That’s how I feel. We’re a work in progress. We need time, which, in football, doesn’t exist.”

Diego Simeone on José Mourinho wanting to talk about referees

“Nothing to say.”

Simeone on the Metropolitano

“What we need is to play a great game against an opponent that needs the points just as much as we do. We need our fans. We’ve put in a lot of effort in our previous matches, so we need the energy from the stadium, the kind the players can channel onto the field. We need our fans because we’ve been through a lot. Let’s hope we get the same atmosphere we’ve always had.”

Simeone on Julián Alvarez

“From what we’ve discussed today with the doctors, he’s still recovering. He won’t be with us tomorrow.”

Simeone on Jonathan David

“He came on very well, we’ll assess whether it’s time for him to start or to give us a hand by coming on in the second half. We’ll decide tomorrow morning.”

Simeone on managing the schedule

“This three-week break is new, we’ll try to adapt just as we adapt to everything else. The players have an incredible attitude. There are more and more games, and that’s part of the game. We have to keep running and working hard because we’re where we chose to be.”

Simeone on negativity

“I wasn’t talking about the schedule, but about rest, we got back from Liverpool late, then from San Sebastián… The rest period is getting shorter, it makes sense, since the Champions League is coming up.”

Simeone on Obed Vargas

“He’s been working enthusiastically ever since he arrived. He faces stiff competition, but he’s a humble, noble, hardworking young man. That’s the path to follow, waiting for his chance, because we’ll surely need to use him, just like everyone else. He’ll have to be ready, as he always is, for that opportunity that I hope the coach can give him.”

Simeone on the Ballon d’Or

“Messi. Without a doubt. After the World Cup he had, at his age, there’s no question: Messi.”
