Marathon’s First Permanent PvE Experience Arrives This December

Marathon players have been expecting the next major update to launch on September 22, but a new update from Bungie has pushed the release back to December.

The content that was originally planned for the September 22 Marathon update is now being rolled into the Symbiosis update to ensure that there’s time to make the update meet player expectations.

Symbiosis will be the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter, launching on December 8th.

The update will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, providing a new way to explore, progress, and engage with the world beyond traditional PvPvE extraction gameplay. Symbiosis is an important milestone for Marathon and the beginning of a broader evolution through March and beyond, shaped by what we learn from players along the way.

Symbiosis will also include a refreshed Perimeter experience, a new social space with a firing range, a new Runner shell, an experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode, and the first of several improvements to the new-player experience.

The team also announced that they’ll be moving away from a strict seasonal schedule to allow for more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released.

MArathon October Refesh

Before the December update arrives, Marathon players will get a refresh update in October.

On October 6, Bungie will reset progression and the in-game economy, giving all players a fresh starting point.

“Marathon Season 2: Nightfall launched with progression and reward issues that accelerated some players into the endgame while leaving others behind. This made Extraction more difficult to engage with and prevented the reset from working as intended. October gives us an opportunity to apply what we learned and establish a healthier progression experience.”

The October update will include:

  • A progression and economy reset
  • A new Rewards Pass
  • Quality-of-life improvements
  • Live tuning and balance updates

As for what is next, Bungie promises that the December update is just the beginning of what the team is working towards.

“We’ll share more about that future through Dev Insights videos and regular development updates. Our first blog about Marathon’s future plans is scheduled for later this month where we will share how we will be evolving Marathon into a more alien and dynamic survival experience.”

Mike McCarthy proves Steelers offense is truly different

For years, Pittsburgh Steelers fans endured a cautious, "dink-and-dunk" offensive scheme designed primarily to avoid mistakes. In the season opener, however, new head coach Mike McCarthy proved that those conservative days are over, unleashing an aggressive downfield attack that fundamentally transformed the team's passing identity.

On the “Locked on Steelers” podcast, host Christopher Carter and his guest Alan Saunders discussed how this offense has changed. They agree that despite a low-scoring finish, the underlying film and metrics revealed a radical shift in philosophy. Armed with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, McCarthy’s offense consistently attacked downfield and targeted the long-ignored middle of the field.

As Saunders highlighted, the statistical transformation was staggering. Rodgers’ average depth of target jumped from 6.0 yards last season to 10.1 yards, while his average time to throw rose from 2.5 to 2.9 seconds to let deep routes develop.

"You look at those two passing charts, it's like two guys playing different sports," Saunders noted, comparing the new scheme to past game plans. "It's not even close to the same."

Carter emphasized that 20% of Rodgers’ pass attempts traveled beyond 10 yards down the middle of the field, nearly doubling last year’s 10.9% rate. Carter pointed out that this aggressive approach directly challenged the conservative mindset of previous seasons, calling it "a completely different philosophy of what we've heard the last few years."

Addressing this shift, McCarthy confirmed in a video shared on the show that attacking deep seams is central to his game planning.

"I'm a big believer that if I'm drawing up a passing game the fastest way to the end zone is through the middle of the field," McCarthy stated. "So, it's a starting point for us. You're always looking to attack."

While low-scoring margins require execution to catch up with intent, the strategic shift is undeniable. By aggressively pushing the ball downfield, McCarthy has ushered in a thrilling new era for Pittsburgh’s offense.
