Once known as “Baby Jessica”, the now 40-year-old Jessica McClure Morales was arrested on Saturday after an alleged disturbance at her Midland County, Texas, home, which she reportedly shared with her husband, Daniel Morales, and their two children, news outlet KXAN reported.
McClure Morales was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm involving family violence. She was later released from Midland County Detention Center after posting bond, People reported.
The woman’s arrest comes close to 40 years after she made worldwide headlines after being rescued alive after being trapped in an abandoned well for close to 60 hours.
On Oct. 14, 1987, McClure Morales, then 18 months old, fell 22 feet down an abandoned well in her aunt’s backyard in Midland, Texas.
The rescue effort took nearly 60 hours. It was broadcast on television screens across the world as emergency personnel tirelessly worked to save her.
Rescuers, at one point, reportedly heard the girl singing about Winnie the Pooh during the operation, per the New York Post .
A drill had to be used to bore a tunnel through the adjacent rocks to free her.
The girl lost a toe to gangrene and had to endure more than a dozen surgeries to treat injuries from the terrifying ordeal.
McClure Morales has long maintained she had no memory of being trapped in the well.
The incident even sparked a 1989 television movie, “Everybody’s Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure.
In a 2017 People interview , McClure Morales talked about the rescue and how things have been since then, stating her “life is a miracle.”
“In a way, I guess it happened the way it was supposed to,” she said. “I was picked on because of it, but most people are kind and think what happened is an amazing miracle. It is. I don’t believe that any of it would’ve happened without God.”
McClure Morales lived a relatively quiet life in Texas in the years after the rescue. She met her husband, Danny, through her sister in 2005 and married the following year.
The woman told People she “instantly fell in love” with her hubby the day they met.
Days following her arrest, McClure Morales reportedly posted a cryptic message on social media, Fox News reported.
“Note to self: Happiness is letting go of what you assume your life is supposed to be like right now, and sincerely appreciating it for everything that it is,” McClure Morales wrote in a Facebook post. “So, relax. Reset. You are enough. You have enough. You do enough. Breathe deep. Let go, and just live right now.”
Authorities have not released further details about the alleged domestic assault incident.
