Arvind Kumar, Director (Refineries), IndianOil Showcases Proven Green Sewage Treatment Plant on World Environment Day

· Free Press Journal

IndianOil's Refineries Division marked World Environment Day 2026 by celebrating a landmark achievement in its sustainability journey — a first-of-its-kind Green Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at its Haldia Refinery, powered by Integrated Wetland Technology (IWT), which has been successfully operational since January 26, 2026.

The successful commissioning of the plant was showcased through an audio-visual presentation released by Arvind Kumar, Director (Refineries), IndianOil, at Refineries HQ, New Delhi — a moment that brought into sharp focus just how far this pioneering initiative has already come.

Developed in collaboration with the Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SINE), IIT Bombay, the plant harnesses the power of nature itself — using wetland vegetation, natural filtration media, and microbial processes to treat sewage without the heavy energy footprint of conventional systems. Over the past four-plus months of proven performance, it has demonstrated lower power consumption, significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and near-zero maintenance overhead — while producing treated water actively reused for horticulture.

This is no longer a promise. It is a working reality. What makes this milestone even more compelling is its replication potential. With field-proven results now in hand, the Refineries Division plans to roll out this model across its refinery network — multiplying the environmental benefit at scale across the country.

In a further demonstration of its circular economy ambitions, the Refineries Division simultaneously announced a pilot programme for recycling end-of-life IFR (Inherently Flame Retardant) suits — the critical safety apparel worn by refinery personnel. Rather than treating used protective gear as waste, the initiative seeks to close the loop on industrial safety equipment, turning an end-of-life challenge into a sustainability opportunity.

Arvind Kumar also unveiled specially designed theme posters to mark the occasion, reinforcing the Refineries Division's message of environmental responsibility across its workforce and stakeholder community.
